Trainer: Roger Evernden

Description

Enterprise Architecture (EA) training courses are often aimed at gaining certification. They may not provide the practical tips and hands-on exercises necessary to fully understand the techniques and tools or how to use them effectively.

The Enterprise Architecture Foundation workshop is designed to fill that gap. It covers all of the key enterprise architecture techniques. Giving just enough of the background and theory,  it concentrates on developing your skills and experience through demonstrations and exercises. You will quickly master the techniques, and then apply them to deliver the outcomes and results that your enterprise wants. The focus is on the essential elements required to deliver results-driven EA programmes, tailored to meet your requirements. It clearly explains everything through real-life case studies, interactive exercises, worked examples, and demonstrations, describing the process for delivering results.

Roger Evernden is a highly experience trainer, mentor and coach. He has been engaged in some of the most significant enterprise architecture programmes since 1984, and brings a wealth of tips, guidelines, anecdotes and advice.

While the focus is on Enterprise Architecture, this course also explains the relationship between the constituent architectures (such as Business Architecture, Information Systems Architecture – Data Architecture & Application Architecture, and Technology Architecture), and shows how each contributes to managing architectural evolution.

The public course can be delivered on-site and on-line, tailored to meet the exact needs of your enterprise. Please contact us for further details.

Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants are able to:

  • Understand, explain and implement change at an architectural level
  • Establish an effective enterprise architecture organisation and operating model
  • Tailor the most appropriate tools and techniques to the specific needs of their enterprise
  • Deliver organisational, business and technical benefits and value from architectural programmes
  • Embed architectural tools, techniques and practice throughout the enterprise
  • Develop the next level of architectural maturity for their enterprise and EA team

Course Outline

DAY ONE

1. Working with Maturity Levels:

  • Assessing EA Maturity: how to use maturity levels to get a realistic view of what you can achieve
  • Taking it to the Next Level: how to improve EA maturity and capability

2. Adopting and Adapting:

  • Selecting the Right Approach: how to take advantage of the available resources, methods, techniques, models and tools
  • Getting the Perfect Fit: how to tailor pre-defined materials to meet your exact needs

3. Organising for Outcomes and Results:

  • Defining the EA Team Context: how to balance internal team roles, how to align with upstream business demands, and how to work downstream with development and delivery
  • Managing Information About Architectures: how to keep track of requirements, portfolios, artefacts, and programmes

4. Case Studies:

  • Getting a Jump Start: how to set priorities, deliver results and value, and make a quick difference
  • Balancing Integration and Transformation: how to make things simple and facilitate innovation
  • Finding the Holy Grail: how to create agile, parameterised, component-based architectural building blocks

DAY TWO

5. Getting the Optimal Management Frameworks:

  • Tailoring Frameworks:  how to create practical tools for managing and governing architecture delivery and process
  • Delivering Value: how to use your management frameworks to measure and demonstrate value
  • Keeping Everyone Happy: how to raise decision-making and debate to the architectural level, and how to communicate and discuss architectural evolution

6. Speaking the Same Language:

  • Sharing Knowledge: how to build a common language through catalogues, reference models, taxonomies, classifications and checklists
  • Taking Advantage of Pareto: how to make best use of the 80:20 rule through generalisation, commonality, and federalisation; how to get real value and benefit from reference models
  • Keeping Track of Things: how to govern creation, use and value of artefacts by making use of your management frameworks

DAY THREE

7. Making Sense:

  • Separating Concerns: how to segment the architecture into meaningful, discrete chunks
  • Simplifying Complexity: how to use building blocks and artefacts to understand the complexity of an enterprise
  • Exploring Options: how to use patterns, models and archetypes to understand architectural domains and to govern change

8. Providing Leadership and Direction:

  • Improving and Changing: how to use visions, strategic themes, vectors and patterns to discuss and plan architectural evolution
  • Guiding Decisions: how to govern alignment and compliance through principles, policies, standards, lifecycles, and patterns
  • Being Proactive: how to raise decisions and discussions to business, senior executive, and board level
  • Being Involved: how to use architectural artefacts and building blocks to radically improve executive and business analysis through tools such as strategy maps, capability assessment, gap analysis, value chains and portfolio management

DAY FOUR

9. Influencing Investments and Programmes:

  • Managing Portfolios: how to group architectural artefacts and manage assets as enterprise resources
  • Linking Architecture, Funding and Resources: how to use roadmaps, road-mapping and versioning to drive architectural change
  • Using Feedback: how to iteratively improve architectures and their implementation
  • Balancing architecture with solution design and implementation: how to use architecture to guide project milestones

10. Learning and Socialising:

  • Joining the Dots: how to build understanding and commitment to a common meta model
  • Keeping it Current: how to get the most from repositories, versioning, slide libraries, presentations, spreadsheets and documents
  • Building a Community: how to use social technologies and wikis to communicate and collaborate

11. Developing EA Capability:

  • Improving EA Maturity: how to leverage maturity models to raise architectural visibility and value
  • Building a Professional Team: how to use certification, skill profiles, roles and responsibilities
  • Developing an Enterprise Architecture Programme: how to position architecture to provide a holistic view of change within the enterprise
