"Architecture Value Chain and Capability Model"
Value chains and capability models are emerging as industry standard best practices for planning, improving, and monitoring enterprise investments. If these things are good for the business enterprise, shouldn't we be able to apply them to describing an architecture capability? As our profession advances and matures, understanding the common activities all architects perform becomes more important. Can we identify those things that we all do, at whatever level we are applying architecture, or in whichever domains? The speaker will present an architecture value chain and a supporting capability/service model that attempts to address these questions, based on practice and industry standards like TOGAF, ISO/IEC 15704, ISO/IEC 15288, and ISO/IEC 42010
2. Presentation by Len Fehskens, VP Skills and Capabilities, The Open Group; and Chief Editor, Journal of Enterprise Architecture.
"Profession vs Practice."
Many practitioners' concepts of enterprise architecture as a profession are understandably strongly influenced by their practice of the discipline, both as an individual and in the context of their organization. But not all practitioners of established professions are "general practitioners"; many are specialists, and their practice is representative of only a portion of the domain addressed by their profession. What does this observation suggest about the emerging profession of enterprise architecture? This talk provides an overview of what it means to be a profession, why some disciplines become professions while others do not, how specialized practices relate to a larger profession, and what these together imply for the design of an emerging profession. (This is a presentation Len is delivering at the May Open Group Conference in Amsterdam.)
