hi
One of the main problems with strategy is not necessarily formulation but more to do with execution.
Enterprise Architecture is the glue between the Strategy (of change) and the Execution (of change).
I am talking about Enterprise Architecture (EA) - true - proper EA - that is not the IT centric view that many incorrectly have.
EA is NOT all about IT.
That’s so important I am going to say it again….
EA IS NOT ALL ABOUT IT.
EA is not even about TRANSFORMATION.
EA is about the environment (People, Process, Technology) that TRANSFORMATION happens within. The glue between Strategy and Execution.
EA is about the system of TRANSFORMATION. The glue between Strategy and Execution.
Specifically it is about supporting the (constant) change that all organisations have to deal with, starting from the formulation of business strategy, through annual business planning to project portfolio creation and through executing projects that finally deliver the physical changes to the organisation (People, Process and Technology)
EA is NOT about doing these things.
EA is about SUPPORTING these things.
Why?
Because of two massively important pressures on organisations today.
1) The unceasing and accelerating changing environment that they must respond to by changing.
2) The unceasing and accelerating complexity of their structure that change must happen to.
Architecture (or rather the Architecture paradigm - modelling and abstraction) specifically addresses these two pressures - EA gets more and more applicable the more complex your organisation is and the more volatile the market and environment your organisation operates within. Architecture can be used in different places/domain and hence you get modifications of the basic Architecture word to things like Technical Architecture, Business Architecture, Process Architecture, etc
I am talking about Architecture as it is applied to the entire Enterprise, hence we call it Enterprise Architecture or EA for short. Actually a more apt name for Enterprise Architecture is Strategic Transformation Architecture.
This is why the fundamentals of Deming are so applicable (if you think laterally) listen to anything Deming said and change the context from “The ford motor company dealing with the processes of producing cars” to “Any company dealing with the processes of transformation”
Deming
===============
Was all about the Quality of Production and applied to Operations.
Operational Quality and Efficiency.
EA

Is all about the Quality of Change and applied to Transformation.
Transformational Quality and Efficiency

EA is about the system of TRANSFORMATION.
