Why the IT-CMF meets the needs of IT and Business management
The effective management of IT has never been more challenging. CIOs now need to mitigate new risks while ensuring the reliability of the IT organization's capacity to deliver business value. The need for IT organizations to reach higher levels of capability maturity is becoming increasingly urgent. CIOs need to step into the role of business partner and deliver agile IT strategies to maintain competitiveness. CIOs need proven tools, processes and metrics to measure the total capability of the IT organization to achieve a value driven and professional approach to IT management.
The IT Capability Maturity Framework (IT-CMF) meets these needs. It is a unique end-to-end framework that:
- Maps IT organizations onto a capability maturity curve based on empirically derived industry best practice across 33 different capabilities of IT management
- Provides practices, outcomes and metrics to improve capability maturity and therefore consistency of output
- Enables organizations to assess and benchmark performance over time
- Enables creation of roadmaps with actionable metrics to improve maturity with best practice guidelines
- Provides capability accelerators and building blocks for improvement
Understanding the Framework
The IT-CMF comprises four macro-capabilities to emphasize their complexity and their importance in managing IT for business value.
The IT Budget is essentially the input to the production process, the IT capability as the production engine and IT value as the output. Managing IT like a business closes the loop by providing the feedback mechanism for adjusting inputs to optimize the output value
IT-CMF breaks down each macro-capability into critical capabilities. These critical capabilities are a specific set of key activities and procedures that must be defined and mastered to enable the IT organization to plan and deliver IT solutions, and to measure the business value consequences of its initiatives and daily activities.
The IT-CMF consists of 33 critical capabilities, each one with a defined summary of successful maturity, a roadmap for maturity and capability building blocks describing elements that should be addressed at each level of maturity
Maturity Profile
The IT-CMF is based on a maturity model approach where excellence is achieved incrementally. The IT-CMF provides a blueprint for incremental improvement across the four macro-capabilities measured on five maturity levels ranging from initial (unmanaged) through to Optimizing (Value-centric IT management with state of the art practices, outcomes and metrics.
